Tuning my 98 GS for the Desert

Hi All.  I now live in Las Vegas where the the temperature runs over
100 degrees regularly.  I used to live in Chicago.

Should I switch to 10w30 ?  I currently use synthetic 5w30.

Should I change the radiator coolant to a different mix?

What else do you recommend I do to the car to help it perform in the
110 degree weather.

Also, the car is burning almost twice as much gas as it did in chicago.
I attribute this to the AC running all the time.  Is there somethingI
can do to keep the car from burning so much gas?

Thanks very much.

If so, which ones?

Have RX330 considering Tundra. Am I crazy?

I own a 2005 RX330 w/DVD navigation, Mark Levenson stereo etc. It currently
has 25k miles on it.  I really like it. Love the ride and can even get past
the jerky tranny. But find that I miss the utility of a pick up truck.  My
wife is forever wanting me to haul crap that no "sane" person would consider
carrying in a luxury car. So far I have been able to keep it undamaged and
have a WeatherTech mat for the rear cargo area.  I know that sometime in the
near future that I’ll probably gouge the interior, spill something that
cannot be removed or who knows what else.

I’m thinking about either a Toyota Tundra double cab or a Nissan Titan
double cab.  I like the looks of the Titan but believe the Tundra would
probably be the better choice.  Sure, would loose the great quiet ride, GPS
(although I do have a Garmin 2610 that I use on my motorcycle), rear seat
DVD player (which has only been used twice when traveling with my grandson)
and all the other luxury touches that a Lexus offers but for my current
lifestyle it’s just not practical.

AM I CRAZY or?????

98 Lexus ES300 with AVS

I am buying a used 1998 Lexus ES300 77000 Miles with the AVS (Adaptive
Variable Suspension). I am wondering if the AVS system is reliable?
Does it have a lot of problems? Because it would probably be expensive
to fix if it has a problem.

My next question… Also on the dash when you turn it on you see a red
car with squiggly tire tracks in the dash picture gram. The dealer told
me VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) was not offered on the 98 ES300. But
my 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD has the same picture gram when you start
it up and the dealer told me that is the VSC self check. So does that
mean mine 1998 Lexus actually does have VSC system? Or could they
dealer have gotten the model’s year  wrong?

Thanks in Advance for any responses

Fuel for '05 ES330

Does the 2005 ES330 require medium or high test gasoline, or can low
test gas be used (isn’t that 89 octane?)?

Recalibrate Speedo and Odo with new tires?

’03 ES300 w/60k miles
Just replaced all four tires, and the odometer and MPG calculations seem to
have changed slightly.  Originally I recorded 27-28MPG on the highway and
21-23 in town.  Now coming in at 23-25 and 19-21.  Checked a couple of fixed
routes that I drive frequently, and they are reading shorter distances than
before.

Asked the dealer to check the speedo and odo when it was last in, and they
say there are not adjustments for tire size.  Didn’t check the original
tires against spec but the new ones are exactly what is called for.

Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated…

98 Lexus ES300 RPM Problem

I have 98 Lexus ES300 with 77,000 miles. Here is my problem. The car
starts and cranks fine and runs fine usually. But sometime right after
I start the car and it is still in park the RPM gauge drops to the last
line before 0, but the engine is still running and you can feel a very
slight vibration or rough noise, very hard to feel or hear Must turn
off A/c and radio. When you put it into gear say D the car doesn’t roll
forward until you press the gas. Usually with automatics the car rolls
forward a bit even with out pressing the gas. If I step on the throttle
a few times or just ingonore it and drive say for 30 seconds like
leaving a parking lot. Then the idle goes back to normal around 1 or
the line right below 1 and the car is fine. It so far has only happend
right after I drive and try to restart the engine, like quick stops for
5 min breaks. It has never happend yet when the car has sat for a while
right before starting it like in the morning.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem? Is it expensive to fix?
Is the engion oil sludge?

Thanks
