Greetings:
This week I became the proud (and very happy) owner of a 2003 RX300.
Believe me, I think if everyone owned one of these things, "road rage"
would be a thing of the past. My blood pressure must drop dramatically
during my commute when I’m in it. Was it President Bush’s father who
said he wanted a "Kinder, Gentler Nation"? Well, if everyone had an
RX300, his desire would’ve been fulfilled.
Before I bought the RX300 I rented other SUV’s including BMW’s X5.
There are two things that the RX300 does that the X5 didn’t do, and
I’m wondering if they are unique to my vehicle or true with all. While
the RX300 seems to want a "Kinder, Gentler Nation" the X5 felt like it
wanted to run everybody off the road!
1. The Automatic Lights.
I have the headlights set for "automatic" I park my vehicle overnight
in a dimly lit heated garage. When I start the vehicle in the
morning, the headlights go on. When I drive it out into the daylight,
the headlights stay on, and remain on for my entire commute even on a
bright sunny day! Is this normal? I’m not talking about the daytime
running lights, I’m talking about the headlights. The X5, in
comparison, shut the headlights off immediately when I drove out of
the garage.
2. The Automatic Climate Control
My garage is heated to 80 degrees F. When I start my RX300 and have
the climate control in Auto, the A/C starts up blowing cold air to get
the temperature down to my pre-set 70 degree F. When I drive out of
my heated garage, and into the "world" the outside temperature is now
25 degrees F. but the RX300 continues to send me an ample supply of
air-conditioned air. It takes about 10 minutes for the outdoor digital
thermometer to get down to 25 degrees, and it takes several minutes
for the system to shut down the a/c and realize that it should start
the heat. The BMW that I rented IMMEDIATELY switched from A/C to heat
when I pulled out of the garage.
But, I’ve got to say, that even though the BMW might be engineered
better, the Lexus is likely to be MUCH more reliable and that matters
a lot to me.
I’m curious though.. Are these "glitches" unique to my vehicle or true
of all RX300′s?
Bob
PS Was it George Bush’s father who said he wanted a "Kinder, Gentler
Nation?"
Congrats on your purchase…
However, the BMW has the option of setting the daytime lights and many other
features at the customers request. When you purchase one they have you fill
out questionnaire and they custom set each vehicle to your preference.
Also…. BMW has a unique feature which actually allows you to set vehicle
to start heating/cooling prior to you entering vehicle. ( i.e. You go to
work at 7:00am…. you can have vehicle set to start warming interior cabin
so that you enter a nice cozy vehicle!
No big deal, but, wanted to keep everything on level playing field!

1) You should have the dealer check it out, they can adjust the sensitivity

why would you want your garage heated to 80 degrees?

I have a 2002 RX300. The headlights turn off almost immediately as soon as I
leave the garage. It does, however, take about 10 seconds to turn on in the
tunnel or under an overpass, etc.
The outside thermostat does seem a bit slow. My garage is 68-degree year
round. I usually have the A/C off (in auto mode) so I haven’t experienced the
problem you’re having.
The RX300 is indeed quiet and smooth. It isn’t as quiet or smooth as the
Lincoln Town Car, but it doesn’t drive like a boat either.

it’s a 93 SC400 – all gauges are lighted except the gas gauge.
so, is replacing the entire unit is the only solution?
thanks,

Pardon me. When you said the gauges were "OFF" I inferred that to mean
inaccuracy… not illumination.

Can’t you pull and open the gauge yourself? Even sealed guages have seam
that can be opened with a bit of force.
The other option is a junk yard.

I had 3 replaced in my es300. I believe the two large nedels are one unit
(two replaced) and my third was the gas gauge. The outside two temp and
gas are small separate units. If memory serves the gas unit was around
200 bucks (just gas). As a side note the gauge is not as accurate now.
never goes to full fill, always an 8th of a tank low. Its not rocket
science, my chevy dealer did it for me and did a great job. Well, except
for the accuracy part. Your air bag will need to be reset. 75 bucks from
lexus if your not part of the family. Chev. tried to reset it but failed.

Jeff

I paid the Lexus dealer $600 for new speedo and tach gauges on my ES300,
so I know what you’re saying. But the speedo is something you need to
see while driving. I wouldn’t bother to replace the fuel gauge needle.
That is not something that needs to be monitored constantly when you are
driving. Even if the needle is totally dark, you can look closely when
the car is not moving, and see the needle position. Also, the low gas
indicator light will still light up when you get down to the empty mark
(which still leaves about three gallons in the tank on my car) You can
also fill up each time, reset your trip meter to zero, leave that lit up
instead of the odometer, and use the miles driven indicator as a guide
as to when to refuel.
