GX470 – Open Letter to Lexus Design Engineers

Just drove the 470 tonite. Nicely done. However, I would like to strongly
urge you to change the rear cargo door from a swing out to a lift up with an
operational window. Please refer to the 4Runner for details.

I live in Chicago, opening that door in a tight parking situation will be
nearly impossible. If it’s raining or snowing, it’s nice to have that big
door overhead for shelter.

Thank you very much.

How did you like the ride etc, David? Any opinions welcomed. I’m trying to
get one to test but they’re still few and far between.

I’ve been driving a 4Runner for years that I’ve been quite happy with. So,
    that’s my frame of reference.

The car drives beautifully. The cabin is quiet and the engine noise is
almost non-existent. I started the car in the parking lot and knew the
engine was running because I could see the tach registering some rpm’s. So
quiet. The drive is quiet too. It’s a confident and comfortable ride. The
engine gives a sense of strength over quickness. It does have some get up
and go when I punched it. The seats are comfortable and the ergonomics are
nice too. I drove a car with Nav and it’s nice to have everything available
via touch-screen. Displays are laid out nicely and the car has plenty of
room. Didn’t fold down the 3rd row seats, but I think it’s safe to say that
unless there are children in the picture, or small adults, it’s not the
place to sit for an extended road trip.

My only complaint is the cargo door. I don’t know what in the world they
were thinking when they engineered it. The door should lift up and not swing
    out. It’s a thirsty monster too (15/18).

John, if you’re a Lexus guy, this is a really sweet car. If you want to save
a few bucks, the 4Runner LTD will give you virtually the same ride, without
some of the Lexus touches. I’m going to take the ’03 4Runner out one more
time before I make up my mind.

If there are any particulars you’d like to know about, let me know.
