Has anyone in the US tried selling an SC400 lately? Blue Book on mine is $21k
trade-in, $29k retail. I’m finding that dealers are only willing to go about
$16k on trade. Apparently there’s a glut of them in my area (Portland, OR) and
it’s driving the prices way down.

When trading in a car, there are three prices in play, your trade in price,
the new car price and the difference. I have found that it’s a lot easier
if you only discuss the difference with the dealer. That way you avoid
being told their going to lowball your trade-in. You know what your present
car is worth, but discussing this with the dealer only creates hard
feelings, and the only thing that is important is the difference. I also
leave the showroom when the salesman says he has to talk to his sales
manager. I give them my number and tell them to call me. I usually have my
answer before I get to my car. Also, get ANY negotiations in writing, such
as repairing rock chips, etc. There is a big difference in repainting the
front end and retouching rock chips, as I found out when I bought my last
BMW. Good luck!

That’s what I’ve been doing, but between the markup over MSRP that they’re
asking for the new car (Honda S2000) and the incredible depreciation on my car,
that difference is a whole lot bigger than I expected when I was doing my
research.

If you have negotiated a good price on the new car, don’t believe anything
about a "glut on the market". The dealer is just trying to make more profit
on the trade. The difference is what you care about. An unethical dealer
may leave the speakerphone on and listen in on what you say to anyone else
inthe room. Tell your companion something like " if I can’t get at least
$xx, then let’s leave, and I’ll take that offer of joe’s. On a lark, I
tried this, and it was the only time I think I got a good deal.

We just traded a 93 SC400 and the retail book value was just under 19k and
wholesale was just under 13K and we had dealers offering 9k to 10k. I was
shocked! We had only 70,000 miles and it was mint! We ended up getting
10,500 for it, but we felt cheated! I don’t understand why the price is so
low.
